So when listening to Liverpool solo artist "Cheapskate" are we going to get stingy music offering us very little in the ways of happiness and musical bliss? Of course not! We've got sheer generosity, a musician who wants to give us everything, 1950's soundtrack music with a whole lot of funk spunk and groove.
Ill get the soundalikes out of the way first because for once there are so few!! Musically it has the retro feel as if your watching "Breakfast at tiffanys", the keyboards remind me of the film "Napleon Dynamite" and all together it has the genius of Beck behind it, Im not sure if Beck is a main influence of "Cheapskate" but it gives you the feeling of "Odelay".
Its refreshing to hear a musician from Liverpool offering somthing so diffrent, strange and beautiful, with so much thought and obvious research put behind it. You can easily tell this guy knows his music and has been expanding his influences by the second. In Manchester they have a solo artist called "Jim Noir" who I have caught live who offers similar but in a more beach boys stylee, where as Cheapskate likes to blend so much more.
"That girl" has funky disco drums, dirty guitar, funk guitar, blues chords and a sack of rhythm. It is all mixed together in Shafts sack and out pops this wonderful creation! Advice wise: I can't do anything, If I told him to record it in a posh big studio and not in his bedroom, It would lose all soul and purpose. I just hope "Cheapo" can in someway create a way for us to capture this live. Any movie makers out there need a film soundtrack creating i would look no further!
